The four new condos at 61 5th Ave, corner of 13th, have finally been priced, and the prices are mindbending. See prices and photos here.

Here’s a great look back at the former Schraffts Restaurant which stood on the southeast corner of 5th and 13th before it morphed into clubs in the 80s and then delis in the 90s before burning down a few years ago. Now, of course, a 10-story condo is rising on the site. But enjoy these memories of the good old days.

Amazingly enough in these tough times, work is going ahead on the construction of ten floors of luxury duplex condos on the corner of 5th Ave. and 13th St, where the burned out deli once stood. To read more about the history of this spot, click here.

Read this excellent post at Jeremiah’s Vanishing New York to learn the complete history of the doomed building at 61Fifth Ave. on the corner of 13th.

Soon to arrive on East 13th. St. in the former Blick Art Space is HGL Art. Here’s how they explain themselves:

“HGL ART provides support for parents/guardians by having children explore the World Art School through a fully immersive bilingual art curriculum focusing on the arts, dance, and music. The program is designed to alleviate the stress of finding courses or activities that provide both safety and a strong foundation for education and creativity. We know that every parent and child’s breaks and schedule vary which is why we offer semesterly admission for the courses and accompanied sessions for the weekend activities to accommodate whatever format works best.”

65 University Place, between East 10th and 11th Streets, is very much on the rise, with its pricey 28 residential units above. The project represents Indian-based developer Bsafal’s first foray into the United States. The firm, in partnership with Argo Real Estate, purchased the site for $30 million in July 2019 and in February 2021, demolition permits were filed to take down the nondescript four-story commercial building at 64-66 University Place. While the offices on upper floors were long vacant, the ground-floor retail tenant, gourmet grocer Agata & Valentina, had announced plans to close following a dramatic rent increase at the end of 2019.
While designer Kohn Pedersen Fox‘s New York City portfolio includes such skyscrapers as Two Waterline Square and 111 Murray Street, the new building is rising to a more moderate scale of 125 feet high. Renderings depict a context-sensitive structure that holds University Place’s strong streetwall and faces its main facade with oversized arched windows framed by corbelled brickwork.
One can only guess at what the condo prices will be.
